Thermoplastic flat bars

General information

Thermoplastic flat bars are elongated, straight products with a rectangular, solid cross-section over the entire length. As the name suggests, they are made of thermoplastics and have the characteristic properties of the latter: ability for reversible plastic deformation and good processability (thermoplastics are the only type of plastic that can be welded).

Thermoplastic flat bars are therefore ideal as construction material for an extremely wide range of uses, including in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, electrical engineering, medical technology, and the food industry.

 

Production

Thermoplastics - from which thermoplastic flat bars are made - are produced from distilled and further converted crude oil by three basic processes: polymerization, polycondensation and polyaddition. They are initially produced mostly on an industrial scale in granulate or powder form. The next step is further processing using one of the processes injection moulding, transfer moulding, pressing, extrusion or calendering. Production processes for thermoplastic flat bars are usually extrusion as well as casting and pressing. Flat bars are manufactured by subsequent machining.

 

Applications

Thermoplastic flat bars can be used in a wide variety of sectors. They are used in vehicle construction, in mechanical and plant engineering, as medical functional parts, in the food industry, and as high-performance functional parts in many technical sectors.
